Transformational Stunner, Part Two

Apr 22, 2026

Picking up the story where we left off, we have a client who bought a house that needed a complete exterior transformation as well as an extensive interior remodel. If you missed those photos of the exterior renovation, we encourage you to take a look. (See https://www.ckjbuilders.com/2026/03/31/transformational-stunner/.) It really is incredible to see the changes between the BEFORE and the AFTER!

Because we are a design-build firm, we take your ideas, your questions, and your musings and put them all on paper. Our drawings are never complete until you say so. Once we both agree on what stays, what goes, and what will be new, the demo can begin.

In this whole-house transformation, we started with the entrance/foyer. The original parquet-floor foyer was closed off from the rest of the first floor, much like most homes built in that era. This tri-level type of floor plan was very “in” in the ’70s. As you walked into the original foyer, there was a set of stairs going up to the bedroom level and another set going down to the walk-out basement. When redesigning the layout, it made more sense to switch the directions of the stairs. You might say, “Wow, that seems extreme,” but if that’s what it takes to make the dream come true, then we’re all in! We never say anything is impossible.

Our client wanted an open floor plan, which included opening the foyer to the rest of the home. By removing the original foyer closet walls, we were able to open the sight lines all the way into the living room, kitchen, and informal dining area. We opened it all!

New hardwood floors were laid throughout to maintain continuity of those sight lines. Our millwork experts built coffered ceilings in the living room, custom bookcases around the fireplace, and crown molding throughout the entire home. Our cabinet designers created kitchen cabinetry and a custom stove hood that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, in line with the space’s flow. They also designed custom “cabinet” doors that cleverly hide the huge butler’s pantry. Be sure to look for that feature in the photos below — it may be one of our finest touches!

Now, let’s talk about what you don’t see or notice right away in the BEFORE and AFTERs. The HVAC system was completely upgraded and newly installed. Every floor in the home is new. The newly constructed garage includes an upstairs storage room. Most of the plumbing is new. The electrical system was fully updated, and all lighting and fans are new. All the window coverings are new.

We can’t forget the bathrooms! The primary bath was blah and uninspired, and the guest bathrooms were nothing more than utilitarian. Along with kitchens and laundry rooms, bathrooms can be some of the higher-ticket items, but they’re also spaces that mean the most to our clients. These are rooms where they start and end their day. These are the spaces that receive special attention when sketching out your dreams before our first meeting. We love it. We encourage it. Bring it!

From structural changes to finishing details, this home was thoughtfully reimagined at every level. Be sure to explore all of the photos below to see the craftsmanship and design choices that make this project so special. When you’re ready to start planning your own transformation, our team is here to guide you from concept to completion — just reach out to begin the conversation.

Enjoy the photos of this extraordinary transformation!

BEFORE–Parquet floors, carpet, and tile all seen from the original foyer. Closets were removed and living room extended and enlarged in the redesign.
BEFORE–Here’s the front door into the foyer. Also seen are the stairs that lead up to the bedroom floor and down to the basement level. The stair directions were switched in the redesign.
AFTER–Foyer closets were removed and replaced with an open half wall opening up the site lines into the living room, kitchen and informal dining area. Take note of the extensive millwork, the hardwood floors, and the enlarged living room.
AFTER
BEFORE–The very small kitchen was closed off from the rest of the house. There was nothing salvageable from the room. We didn’t even keep the window over the sink. There’s a peek of the double deck door opening which we did keep, however the actual doors got replaced.
BEFORE–The kitchen
AFTER–The kitchen doubled in square footage, there is a new island that houses the sink, there is a pot filler over the stove, all the appliances are new, and all the cabinets are custom. The space to the right of the island is the informal dining area. Keep your attention focused on that blank open doorway to the left of the refrigerator. That’s where the magic is!
AFTER–The kitchen
AFTER–Those cleverly designed cabinet doors are a bit like something you see in a Harry Potter movie! What could be behind those doors??
AFTER–The mystery cabinet doors. Where do they lead?
AFTER–Wait, what? This could be our finest project. The Ultimate Butlers Pantry!
AFTER–The Butlers Pantry has a sink AND a window! And the crown molding is superb!

According to Southern Living, “a butler’s pantry done right can boost the resale value of your home, because it’s seen as a luxury feature”

AFTER–The Butlers Pantry is every homeowners dream! Everything in its place and a place for everything!
